When Corey isn’t solving health mysteries he can be found golfing, camping, playing hockey and baseball, reading, learning, and spending time with his wife, friends, and family.
“I began my health journey while attending university in 2011. Many years of head injuries, sub-concussive hits to the head, and other abuse to my brain began catching up with me. I was chronically inflamed and spent the next 3 years with varying degrees and multitudes of ‘brain on fire’ symptoms. I define ‘brain on fire’ symptoms as symptoms that creep up every now and then, such as mood swings and anxiety, but then alleviate. The longer I ignored these warning signs the worse they became. It got to the point where I couldn’t leave the house without having a panic attack and I rapidly cycled between low mood, low self-esteem, rage, and fatigue. I started to become disinterested in school, the very thing that used to keep me motivated. My grades began to suffer as my attention, energy levels and focus declined. While taking a graduate class in neuroscience, I began to connect the dots between my brain function, head injuries and my poor gut health. Since this time, I have been on a non-stop path to learn how to reverse these symptoms.
Today I have completed many more years of post-secondary, am writing a book, doing research, and have no anxiety, mood fluctuations, or troubles with focus. I give all my credit to integrative health and Neurofeedback for reversing my brain dysfunction. I want to spread this knowledge as far, and wide as possible.”
Liz Johnson is a co-founder & Neurofeedback Director of Neurvana Health, scientist, Registered Yoga Therapist and essential oil enthusiast. She holds a Masters in Health Psychology & Registered Yoga Therapist. Background in Biological Science and Neuropsychology from the U of A.
Liz enjoys all things active; most often you can find her playing slo-pitch, golfing, running, tossing kettlebells around or slowing it down with a little yoga.
“I have been blessed with good physical health for the majority of my life. However, the health obstacles I struggled with occurred on the inside. The internal struggle I thought I had managed well my whole life began to unravel with the stress of University. I was becoming more high-strung, irritable and my perfectionist tendencies were at an all-time high. Basically I was living in a constant state of flight or fight. Eventually, something had to give and I started to see relationships with my loved ones suffer.
On whim, it was during a conference that I began to put the pieces of my collapsing mental state together. I was introduced to trauma-focused therapy and it quite frankly changed my life. I uncovered the root of my challenges having stemmed from my own and my parents early-life experiences. I discovered how much these experiences have impacted who I had become and how I was reacting to certain events. With on-going support and continual work with Neurofeedback, Biofeedback and Functional Medicine I have been able to successfully complete a Masters in Psychology while co-founding Neurvana Health. I am extremely grateful for every experience I have encountered and strive to share my experiences and help as many people as possible along the way.”
Carly Deacon is a co-founder at Neurvana Health and a Holistic Nutrition and Health Coach. Her preferred area of study is functional and ancestral health, with specializations in individualized nutrition protocols.
Carly was brought into the functional health world by exploring ways to overcome her own personal health issues, and wanted to use these same avenues to help others struggling with chronic illnesses that they have yet to find the answers to.
Emily Gretton is a Neurofeedback Technician in our Calgary, Alberta office. She has a passion for travelling, practicing yoga, running, and adventuring with family and friends. Emily recently began studying for her bachelor’s degree in Science, majoring in Kinesiology Mind Sciences at the University of Calgary.
I have always been passionate about helping others. Growing up with a father who is a doctor and who shares the same passion, I was able to see the difference he made in his patients’ lives first hand and at an early age. I was especially inspired and motivated to enter the health care field when he started practicing an ‘alternative’ approach in medicine called Prolotherapy. Seeing and experiencing the relief and positive change he brought to his patients helped me to realize how important ‘alternative’ health care is and how much I want to pursue it.
Lindsay Mah graduated from SAIT in 2012 as a Medical Lab Assistant. At Neurvana Health, she performs phlebotomy. Lindsay is also currently studying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at the ACATCM in Calgary, specializing in acupuncture. She jumped into the world of functional medicine after finding conventional Western medicine unsuccessful in remedying chronic pain and healing past sports injuries.
As a dedicated student of functional medicine, Lindsay has learned that health issues and injuries are rooted in holistic causes, and need to be addressed with a multi-faceted approach. The blend of emotional wisdom and scientific merit of integrative health makes it one of the most exciting opportunities Lindsay has ever been a part of. She chose to pursue acupuncture and TCM after seeing how it treated her health issues and boosted her quality of life far more than traditional, one-dimensional healthcare. As Lindsay transitions from phlebotomist to acupuncturist, she strives to maintain the health of others by using her diverse medical knowledge.
Outside of the office, she is often hiking or snowboarding in the mountains, enjoying a run and training for obstacle races. She balances out her active life style by being a potato chip connoisseur and a mom to two chinchillas. She also loves seeing her friends and family happy and is never afraid to crack a sassy joke.
Antonio Massarotto-Hinojosa is a Neurofeedback Technician in our Calgary, Alberta office. His original work centres around the study of emergent phenomena in complex systems. Once upon a time he was an avid musician, and now conducts the electric symphony of the human mind. In his spare time, he refines his experimental designs, showing anyone willing that the laws of nature cannot be broken; only discovered.
Renee Deacon is an office administrator and testing specialist in our Red Deer, Alberta office. After working in the public school system for 14 years, she experienced a vast number of students with ADD, ADHD, OCD, and anxiety who were taking pills daily with no significant change in their lives. She knew there had to be something or someone out there that could help to do more than just prescribe medication.
Renee enjoys spending time with my family and friends. Travelling to experience other cultures is a big passion of hers.
Ashley Box is a Neurofeedback Technician, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Certified Yin Yoga Teacher in our Red Deer, Alberta office. She is an adventure seeker, and has backpacked through quite a few countries now and will continue to explore more. She loves hiking, yoga, boating, being in nature and has a huge soft spot for animals.
After struggling with an un-diagnosed chronic illness for several years, Ashley strives to help others overcome their own chronic issues and be able to provide the support and motivation they need to become the best version of themselves. Her health struggles have led her to be a more compassionate, understanding and patient person who is happy to be working in the natural healthcare field with determination to make everyone who walks through our door feel a sense of hope and relief.
