Bipolar disorder is a mood condition that impacts approximately 3% of the population. Characterized by alternating episodes of severe depression and equally intense elevated moods, it poses one of the highest suicide risks among mental health disorders. A naturopathic approach to managing bipolar disorder can offer integrative, natural options that work alongside conventional methods to alleviate symptoms and enhance overall well-being. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) recognize bipolar disorder as a complex condition influenced by genetic, environmental, and biochemical factors, employing both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies to support patients.

Individuals with bipolar disorder experience extreme mood fluctuations. During manic episodes, a person may feel an overwhelming sense of euphoria and heightened energy, leading to feelings of invincibility. This state often includes racing thoughts and increased self-confidence, which can result in poor decision-making and risky behaviors. Additional signs of mania encompass restlessness, irritability, rapid speech, difficulty concentrating, reduced need for sleep, impulsive spending, substance abuse, aggressive actions, heightened sexual urges, and a denial of these behaviors.

The intensity of manic episodes can vary significantly among individuals, with some experiencing milder forms known as hypomania. Hypomania often leads to increased productivity, but if left unaddressed, it may escalate into full-blown mania or abruptly shift into a depressive episode.

During depressive episodes, individuals may exhibit symptoms akin to major depression, including pervasive sadness, anxiety, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, lack of energy, disinterest in previously enjoyable activities, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, and thoughts of death or suicide. A depressive episode is typically diagnosed when at least five symptoms persist for most of the day, nearly every day, for a duration of at least two weeks. Many people seek help during these phases, as the signs are often more apparent, yet both manic and depressive phases can lead to significant harm.

If either phase of bipolar disorder goes unmanaged, the severity of episodes may escalate. Substance abuse is frequently observed in individuals with bipolar disorder, though the relationship remains ambiguous. It may stem from impulsive behavior during manic phases or as a means to numb or escape depressive feelings. There may also be genetic or biological factors involved. Those with bipolar disorder are advised to avoid intoxicants for their safety.

Neurofeedback therapy can be beneficial for individuals dealing with bipolar disorder, as it aims to retrain the brain for improved emotional regulation, leading to more stable moods and reduced feelings of depression and anxiety. Many diagnosed with bipolar also face co-occurring mental health challenges, such as anxiety disorders, PTSD, and ADHD, all of which neurofeedback can help address. While neurofeedback has been shown to decrease reliance on various medications, results can differ from person to person. Over time, as brain function improves, individuals with bipolar disorder may find themselves able to lead a more typical life.
